FutureFear (tm)
We have a rather obvious global crisis. War in Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya. Terror in London, New York, Madrid. Riots in Paris. And thats just what I saw in the news in the last few days. There is no way to deny that our civilization has issues.
Look at the future. Look a few years ahead. Do you see anything but fear ? Do you see more war, more anti-terrorist laws, rising oceans and energy crises? Do you see anything good, do you have any hope ? I don't know many who do. We are all afraid of tomorrow.
We avoid the issues in the world around us by just working harder and focusing on the priorities of consumerism. Or, if we live on the other side, we see nothing but this encroaching capitalist monster destroying culture after culture. Either way it's hopeless. When you have no hope, when you live on nothing but fear - you will do whatever it takes.
When you see nothing but Armageddon, you get nothing but the end of the world. To avoid the doom, you have to actually see a way past it. We have to get rid of our FutureFear.
One of the primary causes of our FutureFear is the inability of our organizational systems to cope with the quantity of change and people. This leaves governments reactionarty and remote, leaves corporations as nothing more then machines to exploit. Rather than adapt, these organizations respond out of fear and can to nothing but repress and deny. Slowly we end up with nothing but a police state, which can only lead to more violence and a downward spiral.
Large, unresponsive organizations have no values. They simply exist to serve themselves. This valueless mass is one of the causes of the hopeless anger against the west. Blind and deaf they cannot hear or see the pain around them, they cannot listen to small voices, leaving no option but violence.
The organization must change. The monolithinc power structures must be rebuilt as social and human systems. When individuals are able to influence their lives, change is easier to cope with. Once we have the tools and support systems in place to cope with constant change, then we can begin to open up to a little FutureLove (tm). And, that, dear friend, is a much nicer place to be.
